Breast reduction surgery is a common procedure to reduce the size and the weight of your breasts. Many women suffer from back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and other issues such as ruts in the shoulder from bra straps and intertrigo, a fungal infection under the breasts. Breast reduction offers a way to make the breasts lighter and smaller as well as lifted.
The two main types of breast reduction performed in my office are liposuction breast reduction and traditional breast reduction.
Liposuction breast reduction has almost no scars since the breasts are reduced with liposuction alone. Each breast has only a small, ¼ inch hole where the liposuction is performed. The operation takes only 1-2 hours and patients are back to work in 2-5 days. The operation gives a little lift, but not the same amount as a traditional lift. It is also for patients with fat in their breasts since it cannot remove breast gland. I can go over your options once you come in for a consultation.
Traditional breast reductions require a scar that usually has a lollipop shape. The score goes around the nipple area and then down towards the crease under the breasts. Sometimes a small scar is also required under the breasts. After the breasts are lifted and made smaller, they are stitched together and tape is applied to the wounds for 3 weeks. The tape can get wet in the shower starting the day after surgery. Most people are back to work in 5-7 days. Silicone sheeting scar therapy is recommended for 1 year.
Overall, breast reductions are far less painful than most people fear, but the scars of a traditional reduction must be understood before surgery.
RISKS OF breast REDUCTION
In addition to the risks associated with surgery and anesthesia, those related to augmentation mammaplasty using implants include the following:
- A temporary or permanent change in nipple/breast sensation
- Damage to the blood supply of the nipple causing nipple death
- Irregularities in breast contour/shape which may require additional surgery.
- Asymmetry of the breasts. This is usually from an original asymmetry with the breast anatomy prior to surgery which could not be completely corrected.
- Scarring – There is always a scar, so patients must understand the risks pre-operatively. Most scars are totally acceptable.
All pricing includes pre-op/post-op appointments, surgeons fee, and facility/anesthesia fees.
