Facelift FAQs

Over time, gravity and sun exposure take their toll on the face and neck. Deep creases that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth appear; the jawline slackens; and the neck develops loose folds and fat deposits. A facelift (rhytidectomy) counteracts these signs of aging by tightening the muscle, removing fat and trimming excess skin, giving the face a fresher, more youthful look.

WHAT CAN A FACELIFT DO FOR ME?

A facelift improves the look of the lower and middle areas of the face, and the neck. It is most effective for correcting the following:

  • Mid-face sagging
  • Jowls
  • Sagging fat
  • Loose skin and fat under the chin and jaw

Although a facelift removes or reduces signs of aging, over time, they will gradually reappear. A facelift does not improve the look of the brow, eyelids and nose, and some parts of the mid-face. A patient who wants to improve those areas might combine a facelift with a brow lift or eyelid surgery, and/or with injectable soft-tissue fillers, facial implants and skin resurfacing.

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR A FACELIFT?

The best candidates for a facelift want to correct one or more of the signs of aging indicated above; have some facial sagging, but still have elasticity in their skin; are generally healthy; do not smoke; and have realistic expectations about what rhytidectomy can do.

HOW IS A FACELIFT PERFORMED?

A facelift is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in an office-based facility, surgery center or hospital. Patients may have a choice of IV sedation or general anesthesia. The procedure takes 2-4 hours. The way a facelift is performed depends on your needs, but always includes an incision in front of the eat. Full facelifts that correct the neck also require an incision behind the ear and back into the hair of the scalp. Scars are hidden in the hairline and natural contours of the face.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY FROM A FACELIFT LIKE?

After a facelift, you are wrapped in a fluffy head-dressing for 24 hours. Sutures and staples are removed within 1 week. Swelling, numbness, bruising and a feeling of tightness or tension in the face and neck may be felt. The face may look uneven or distorted, and facial muscles may feel stiff. Most of these side effects resolve within 3 to 6 weeks, and sensation typically returns to normal within a few months. Scars become less red, raised, lumpy and itchy over time.

HOW LONG DO THE EFFECTS OF A FACELIFT LAST?

Results of a facelift are not permanent, and some patients choose to undergo another in 5 or 10 years. In some sense, however, effects are permanent; years later, the face continues to look better than if rhytidectomy had not been performed.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF A FACELIFT?

Possible complications of a facelift include:

  • Bleeding. This is the most common. It is not life-threatening, but you may need to go back to the operating room to remove the blood.
  • Nerve injury. This can affect sensation or motor (facial movement) nerves. It is usually temporary but can be permanent.
  • Wound healing issues. More common in men and much more common in smokers. You MUST stop smoking 4 weeks before surgery and continue to avoid smoking for 4 weeks afterward.

Other facial procedures:

Browlifts – starting at $2750

Browlifts are commonly performed at the same time as a facelift and require an incision somewhere on your brow to elevate the skin that is drooping over your eyes. I can decide the best option for you at consultation. Brow lifts can also be done with blepharoplasty (eyelid) surgery or as a stand-alone procedure. It is a small procedure with big benefits!

Chemical Peels and Dermabrasion

Starting at $1000

Sometimes the skin around your eyes or around your mouth or even over your entire face, needs to be refreshed and renewed. In those cases, removal of the skin is not the goal – the goal is to revitalize the skin. Chemical peels and dermabrasion are terrific ways to remove wrinkles and provide fresh new looking skin in the area. Peels can be deep or superficial based on your needs and we have a full range of chemical peels and dermarasion options in the office to help you.

*All pricing includes pre-op/post-op appointments, surgeons fee, and facility/anesthesiaa fees.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a procedure that is done to help the face appear more youthful and rejuvenated. The process involves removal of fat and trimming excess skin from the face to aid in reversing the signs of aging on the face.

Am I a good candidate for a Facelift

The ideal candidate for a facelift is someone who wants to correct more than one more signs of aging like midface sagging, jowls, loose skin and fat around and under the jaw, as well as sagging fat on the face. Facelifts will aid with a patient looking to correct these issues, but a facelift will not improve the look of the brow or eyelids, so a patient might require to get a combination brow lift or eyelid surgery as well.

Are there any risks to getting a Facelift?

With a facelift there will always be a risk involved with any surgical procedure. Some of the risks that come from a facelift will be bleeding, although it won’t be life-threatening you might need to return to the operating room to remove it. There would be nerve injury that will affect the sensation or facial movement of the nerves in the face. Some can be temporary, while others can be permanent. There can also be a potential risk in wound healing, although it is more common for men than women, so it is why we require that especially if you are a smoker that you stop smoking 4 weeks before your surgery, and that you avoid smoking again the 4 weeks following a facelift.

How long is the recovery period?

The recovery period is anywhere between 3 to 6 weeks for patients. For the first 24 hours after surgery patients are wrapped in head dressing, then your sutures and staples are removed within the first week following your surgery. Patients will feel bruising, swelling, and tightness or tenison around the face and neck.
